• Budgeting for Apartment Living

When choosing what apartment to rent from many available in major cities, there are a lot of factors to consider.

Apartment living involves several expenses such as how much of a security deposit is needed in addition to rent for the first month. This will be the total amount you will need to save before being able to rent the apartment you want. Many landlords may require tenants to sign a one year lease, which states that anyone breaking the lease will not get their deposit back. Besides the monthly rental expense, there will be at least an electric bill. If the kitchen has a gas stove, the gas company will be another bill. Water and trash pickup may or may not be included with the rental payment. This will have to be budgeted for along with telephone, credit cards, and any other bills and expenses.

How far will you be living from employment or school? This will be your typical commuting time and distance on a weekday. If you own a car you will need safe, adequate off street parking, which may be difficult to find in major metropolitan areas.
Having to park on the curb, while hoping to find a parking space close to home every day will get tiring, particularly in bad weather. Paying a parking garage will increase living expenses, maybe making it unaffordable.

If living without a car, an analysis of the surrounding environment becomes more critical, such as how far to the bank and supermarket, plus other shops. Proximity to public transportation must be taken into account, it may stop at the corner or several blocks away. If living right at a busy intersection, noise at the street level may be a bit much, so choosing apartment living a few floors up may be best. High rise living brings another set of concerns, beginning with total dependance on the elevator plus fire hazards on older buildings.

Some people are quite happy riding their bicycles to nearby shops and facilities, at least when the weather is agreeable. Hazards to bicycles on busy metropolitan streets may not be worth it, unless it's a quiet Sunday morning.

Rental agencies which represent several landlords may make the search for comfortable apartment living safer and faster, providing several choices with their list of amenities and expenses at one place.
